Fashion & technology: The Innovation of 3D Printing

Updated: Apr 26

3D printing, its cutting-edge technology has made itself known by advocating for more sustainable textile production. While the current and new age of digitalization sets itself to revolutionize the industry, the development has sweetened energy efficiency and safety.

This not only improves the fit and comfort of the clothing but also reduces the need for excess material and reduces the amount of clothing that ends up in landfills. With 3D printing, designers can also experiment with different materials and textures, opening up new possibilities for sustainable and environmentally friendly fashion.

Though it takes many hours to create clothes, its minimal-waste approach could provide knowledge on how to reshape the fashion industry more sustainably. It also takes fashion to a new level of visionary art – dresses and haute couture clothes made from the skillfulness of this invention. While 3D printing is rather new and not yet widely available, designer companies and designers like Galerie Dior, Iris van Herpen, and Julia Daviy have embraced 3D printed materials to limit resource usage and waste.

One of the main advantages of 3D printing in fashion is its ability to create customized and personalized designs. Nonetheless, with traditional manufacturing methods it can be difficult and costly to create unique pieces for each customer. However, with 3D printing, designers can easily create customized designs based on each individual's measurements and preferences.

Not to mention, there may be a few outlets and shops where anyone can go in and 3D print their clothes or fashion items. Let’s not forget that major fashion brands are also using this technology. Nike, for example, in 2018, the brand created the world’s first 3D-printed shoes. Another large brand, Stella McCartney, collaborated with Adidas to create a 3D-printed midsole. And so, as more designers and brands explore the opportunities of 3D printing, 3D-printed clothes may start appearing more mainstream.

The future of 3D printing is quickly evolving as the route to a more responsible and conscious future is becoming brighter. Much of the fashion industry is ongoing change and efforts within the textile industry and stressing the importance of more ethical production. Above all, utilizing 3D printing in the fashion industry is beneficial, paving the way for a more brilliant and green future.
